As well as our statutory duty to select solely on merit, The Constitutional Reform Act 2005 also requires us to encourage diversity in the range of persons available for selection.
The Commission has identified four specific groups that are currently under-represented in the judiciary. These are solicitors, women, people from a ethnic minority group and disabled people.
We encourage diversity through our outreach programme and in partnership with the Bar Council, Law Socirety, ILEX and other groups. Together we are working to highlight the range of judicial opportunities available, demystify the selection process and help people make an informed choice as to whether they want or are ready to seek judicial office.
Partnership working is at the heart of our strategy and we work with a wide range of organisations, especially those from the legal community. These include:
