Five new appointments to the High Court mean there are now 14 women on the Bench, the highest number ever.
Date: 12 September 2008
Five years ago there were six women High Court judges. Six months ago there were 10. Earlier this year, the JAC's 22 recommendations for High Court posts were accepted by the Lord Chancellor. The five latest appointments were the first of those 22 to be announced.
Baroness Prashar, chairman of the Judicial Appointments Commission, welcomed an increase in the number of women on the High Court Bench. She said: "We are delighted we are making progress. The legal profession and the judiciary are becoming more diverse, and we expect the composition of the senior judges will gradually come to reflect those changes."
