Once you have taken a salaried role, you will not be allowed to return to legal practice.

The Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice Jack Straw confirmed in November 2007 that the convention that former judges cannot return to practice as barristers or solicitors would remain. Having considered the arguments both for and against return to legal practice, following a government consultation, he announced to Parliament that he was not persuaded that lifting the conventional prohibition would increase diversity of the judiciary.

The consultation paper 'Return to Practice, Conditions and Safeguards' was published by the then Department for Constitutional Affairs in September 2006, with consultation closing in December 2006. A summary of the responses received is available on the Ministry of Justice website.
