Widening the range

JAC selects candidates on merit. We are committed to widening the range of applicants for judicial appointment and to ensuring that the very best eligible candidates are drawn from  a wider range of backgrounds

JAC has developed a tripartite programme of diversity with the then Department for Constitutional Affairs (now Ministry of Justice) and the Directorate of Judicial Offices.

The JAC's specific undertaking is to:

  • encourage a wider range of applicants so as to ensure the widest possible choice of candidates for selection, and
  • promote diversity through fair and open processes for selection to judicial office that are based solely on merit.

Diversity reporting

As part of the tripartite programme we have agreed that there will be a reporting strategy that will measure and report on judicial diversity from application through to appointment and beyond.

For its part, JAC will collect data at each stage of the selection process from application to recommendation according to disability; ethnicity; gender and professional background.  The JAC will report annually with its tripartite partners on the measures of success for the judicial diversity programme.

JAC will also measure the effectiveness of its advertisements, hits on the website and both application and information pack requests and actual applications to ensure that we are increasing the number and range of people to whom we are communicating our opportunities.

Copies of the tripartite diversity strategy and the reporting measures are available to download from the right-hand menu.
