Deputy Senior District Judge (Chief Magistrate)
The JAC has been asked to identify a candidate to take on the important and demanding leadership role of the Deputy Senior District Judge.
The Deputy Senior District Judge undertakes a wide range of judicial and administrative responsibilities in support of the Senior District Judge (Chief Magistrate). The latter may include assisting in the deployment of judges and deputies as required; supporting and guiding judicial colleagues; conducting and participating in judicial training events; and, in the absence of the Chief Magistrate, assuming the powers, duties and responsibilities of the post.
In addition, the post holder will be expected to carry out the full duties of a District Judge (Magistrates’ Courts). Time permitting, this may include hearing some of the most sensitive, long and complex cases, including extradition cases and terrorist applications, subject to the required authorisation being granted.
The successful candidate will be required occasionally to sit unsociable hours and to be on call during some evenings and weekends.
In accordance with statute, only salaried District Judges (Magistrates' Courts) can apply for this post.
