About the jurisdiction

The Administrative Appeals chamber is one of four chambers in the Upper Tribunal, a superior court of record with UK wide jurisdiction. It is responsible for dealing with appeals against decisions made by certain lower tribunals and organisations.

The work allocated to those who are appointed will predominantly involve appeals from the Social Security and Child Support jurisdiction of the First-tier Tribunal, Social Entitlement Chamber.

Who can apply

You are eligible to apply for this post if:

a) you are a solicitor or barrister in England or Wales with at least 7 years post qualification legal experience

b) you are an advocate or solicitor in Scotland of at least 7 years standing

c) you are a barrister or solicitor in Northern Ireland of at least 7 years standing

d) in the opinion of the Senior President of Tribunals, you have gained experience in law which makes you as suitable for appointment as if you satisfy any of the conditions at (a) to (c)

In addition, candidates should be able to offer a reasonable length of service, usually at least four years, before the statutory retirement age of 70.

Preparing your application

Throughout the selection process, candidates will be assessed against a competency framework specifically tailored to the role of a judge in the Upper Tribunal, Administrative Appeals Chamber. The competencies are aligned to the Judicial Skills and Abilities framework used by the judiciary and Judicial College, and lists the ways in which a person demonstrates the required skills and abilities when working effectively in post.

As part of the application, candidates will be required to provide a statement of suitability to demonstrate the following three competencies:

  • Exercising Judgement
  • Working and Communicating with others
  • Managing work Efficiently

The statement of suitability will be limited to 750 words and should contain specific examples that demonstrate how a candidate’s experiences makes them suitable for the role. Further information on completing the suitability statement and choosing the best examples is on the JAC website.

Candidates can also create an online account before applying. The JAC's online application system requires all candidates to create an account. The account includes personal, character and diversity profiles which are stored on the system.
