The JAC has been asked to identify up to 200 candidates to recommend for the post of Fee-paid Medical Members of the First-tier Tribunal, Social Entitlement Chamber

About the tribunal

The Social Entitlement Chamber of the First-tier Tribunal hears appeals relating to a wide variety of benefit decisions made by central and local government.

The tribunal’s composition depends on the nature of the appeal. All tribunals include a Tribunal Judge. Tribunals, which include a medical practitioner, and in some cases, a member with specialist knowledge of disability issues, also hear appeals that involve medical issues.

As a medical member of the Tribunal, you will hear appeals relating to:

  • Personal Independence Payment
  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Employment & Support Allowance
  • Universal Credit

You will use your professional expertise to analyse the medical evidence provided in order to advise other members of the tribunal.

During the hearing, you and your fellow tribunal members will decide appeals by considering facts and applying the relevant law.

You will also need to read and assimilate appeal papers, some of which can be substantial and complex, before the hearing commences.

Who can apply

To be eligible to apply candidates must have unconditional registration with the General Medical Council as a fully registered medical practitioner.

‘Registered medical practitioner’ means a fully registered person within the meaning of the Medical Act 1983 whether or not they hold a licence to practise under the Act.

About the appointment

Vacancies are available across England, Wales and Scotland. Members are expected to make themselves available to the tribunal for at least 15 days a year.

The daily fee is £338.56 a day. After a medical member has sat for 20 days in any financial year, the fee is £406.50 a day.
